Pick a Pathologist Pal Day

Wellcat Holidays, the founder of Pick a Pathologist Day, writes of the day: "Pathologists and coroners are an especially jovial lot, and befriending one of them offers an ongoing reminder [that] 'tomorrow' is not necessarily a guarantee." Pathologists examine bodies and body tissues, perform lab tests, assist other healthcare providers in diagnosing diseases, and help with treatment. They practice in the community, in universities, in government hospitals and clinics, in independent labs, in private offices, and in other medical facilities.

To become a pathologist, one must go to medical school, where training is usually in both clinical and anatomical pathology, and they must have three or more years of medical education in a residency program. After this, the candidate is eligible to take board certification exams through the American Board of Pathology. They must recertify every ten years, and there are a number of subspecialty certifications that can be obtained from the board. According to those behind Pick a Pathologist Pal Day, pathologists are worth more than just this work—they also are jovial people who should be befriended!
