National Gift of the Ladybug Day honors all children with critical illnesses and provides the opportunity to raise awareness about childhood illnesses and to support children and families facing illnesses. It was founded by Carole Mac, the author of The Gift of the Ladybug, a story about a family of horses who discover their child is a ladybug and won't live for very long. The ladybug is a symbol of a child facing a critical illness: their lives are short, but they are perfect just the way they are. Mac got the idea for the book after learning her son TJ had a critical illness diagnosis—a reality hundreds of families face every day. National Gift of the Ladybug Day takes place on the anniversary of TJ's birth.
How to Observe National Gift of the Ladybug Day
The day is to be spent embracing loved ones exactly how they are. Buying a copy of The Gift of the Ladybug or a stuffed ladybug for a child with a critical illness are other suggested ideas. A percentage of the proceeds of the sale of the book go to support children with critical illnesses. Finding other ways to support children and families affected by critical childhood illnesses is another way to participate. Spread the word about the day on social media with the hashtag #GiftOfTheLadybugDay. For updates, follow The Gift of the Ladybug on Facebook.
