Taking its name from the inspirational book series Chicken Soup for the Soul, this holiday is about reflecting on and celebrating where you've been and where you are headed. According to multiple online sources, the publisher of the book series, Chicken Soup for the Soul Publishing, has said the day is "...a celebration of who you are, where you've been, where you're going, and who you will be thankful to when you get there!" Some online sources claim that the publisher created the day as well. However, Chicken Soup for the Soul did not do so, and it is unclear how the day got started. In 2014, owner and editor-in-chief Amy Newmark said about the holiday, "We did not create National Chicken Soup for the Soul Day, and we don't know where it came from." She added that it had already been appearing on calendars at the time she came to the company in 2008. The day can also be used to celebrate Chicken Soup for the Soul books in general.
Chicken Soup for the Soul Publishing, located in Cos Cob, Connecticut, was started in the early 1990s by motivational speakers Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield. They used 101 inspirational stories, culled from their audience members, to create Chicken Soup for the Soul. Published in 1993, it became a bestseller and has sold over 11 million copies.
They continued to compile books that took inspirational stories from everyday people's lives. The first book was followed by A 2nd Helping of Chicken Soup for the Soul. They continued to expand on the series, and books were created with certain focuses, and different demographics of readers in mind. For example, they published Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul in 1997.
In 2008, the original owners sold the company to William J. Rouhana, Amy Newmark, and Robert D. Jacobs. Chicken Soup for the Soul Publishing puts out about one new book a month, and over 250 titles have been published in total. Over 100 million have been sold in the United States and Canada, and 500 million around the globe, having been translated into over 40 languages. It has become the best selling trade paperback series of all time, and today everyday people can submit their stories to be a part of the books. In addition to books, the company has also expanded to be involved in selling food and pet food, and in doing work in television.
How to Observe Chicken Soup for the Soul Day
The day may be celebrated by focusing on your own life and soul, by reflecting on your past, present, and future. Books from the Chicken Soup for the Soul series could be read, and you could even submit one of your own stories to be considered for a future book. This is also a great day to listen to the Chicken Soup for the Soul podcast. If you are looking for something to eat today, why not have some chicken soup?
