International Golden Retriever Day

International Golden Retriever Day celebrates Golden Retrievers. On this day, owners treat their Golden Retrievers extra special, Golden Retrievers in need are supported, and Golden Retrievers are often adopted. The day's founder, Kristen Shroyer, was watching the news with her Golden Retriever Quincey at her feet and saw the newscasters were celebrating National Cherry Pie Day. It got her wondering if there was a holiday dedicated to Golden Retrievers. When she didn't find one, she decided to make one and set it on Quincey's birthday.

Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States and an ideal family pet. They were developed in Scotland in the nineteenth century as gundogs and water retrievers, with the intent that they would retrieve game birds. The first litter was born in 1868 at Guisachan House, owned by Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks, in the Scottish Highlands. Golden Retrievers were first shown in England in 1908 and were registered with the American Kennel Club in 1925.

Golden Retrievers have thick, golden brown fur coats which must be brushed a few times a week. The dogs weigh between 55 and 75 pounds and are between 21.5 and 24 inches tall at the withers. They are gentle, friendly, playful, and obedient, although they must be trained. They like to work, are great swimmers, may be trained to be guide dogs for the blind, and as their name suggests, are great retrievers. They need physical exercise daily, as well as mental stimulation. Games of fetch, hiking, and walks are great ways for them to get exercise.

How to Observe International Golden Retriever Day

The founder suggests celebrating in the following ways:

  • Treat your Golden to a car ride, trip to his/her favorite park, and a nice long walk.
  • Donate goods or funds to your local Golden Retriever Rescue, animal shelter, or Humane Society.
  • Surprise your Golden with his/her favorite treat—a peanut butter KONG, homemade treat, whatever they love best!
  • Don't have a Golden Retriever? This day might be the perfect time to adopt!
  • Use #GoldenRetrieverDay on all posts and tag the day's Instagram and Facebook pages.
