National PrepareAthon! Day is a biannual national day of action that takes place on April 30 and September 30. Sometimes referred to as America's PrepareAthon! Day, it takes place during America's PrepareAthon!, "a national awareness campaign to get families and communities thinking about how to respond in the event of a disaster or other emergency." The September observance is also the culmination of National Preparedness Month, marked each September.
During the campaign and on National PrepareAthon! Day, the Federal Agency Management Agency (FEMA) works closely with other state and local partners to promote emergency preparedness. National PrepareAthon! Day is a day to learn about the types of disasters that could affect one's community—such as floods, wildfires, drought, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, extreme cold and snow, and active shooters—and what can be done to keep safe and mitigate damage. It's a day for developing individual, family, and community emergency plans. Emergency supply kits are put together, emergency drills are implemented, insurance policies are reviewed, plans of where to meet loved ones in case of disaster are made, and steps are made to ensure the protection of important documents, medical records, and valuables.
How to Observe National PrepareAthon! Day
- Develop individual, family, and community emergency plans for natural disasters. Along with this you could make plans for where to meet loved ones in case of disaster, review insurance policies to make sure you have the appropriate insurance in case of disaster, take part in drills, and make plans for ways to secure important documents, medical records, and valuables.
