Games Day is an annual gaming convention held in England, with events held in the United States and Canada as well, albeit on different dates than the English event. Games Day is sponsored by Games Workshop, makers of Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000, The Lord of the Rings Battle Game: The Two Towers, and other tabletop wargames. Enthusiasts of Games Workshop's games take part in what Games Workshop has called "a day designed to highlight the size, splendor, and excitement that is our hobby."
Games Workshop created Games Day in 1975 after another gaming convention was canceled. The first Games Day was held on December 20 at Seymour Hall in London. The early events helped foster the burgeoning of a gaming scene in the United Kingdom. The second Games Day was on February 12, 1977, at the Chelsea Town Hall in London. In more recent years, the event has regularly been held at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Around 10,000 attendees from around the world attended the event each year during the first decade of the twenty-first century.
Games Day started being held in Baltimore in 1993, and Chicago added the day after the success of the Baltimore event. In the United States, Games Day has also been held in Los Angeles and Atlanta. Games Day has been hosted at the Queen Elizabeth Building at Exhibition Place in Toronto, Ontario. Games Day events have also been held in France, Japan, Poland, and Australia.
Attendees of Games Day play tabletop games with other hobbyists. There are tournaments, presentations, and new game previews and products from Games Workshop. There is a miniature painting competition, the Golden Demon, as well as other competitions. There is also a dealer's area, where companies like Citadel Miniatures, makers of the armies used in the games, take part. Games Day has been less active in recent years, or there has been less of an online presence related to it.
How to Observe Games Day
The ideal way to spend Games Day is to attend the Games Day event in England. You could also check to see if there are any upcoming Games Day events near you. Another great way to celebrate is to play a Games Workshop tabletop game with friends. You could play other games too. Make sure to stay up to date with what Games Workshop is working on as well!
