International Transgender Day of Visibility

International Transgender Day of Visibility, also known as Transgender Day of Visibility or Trans Day of Visibility, or TDOV for short, has been observed since 2009. Michigan transgender activist Rachel Crandall Crocker, founder of Transgender Michigan, created the day because there was only one other day dedicated to transgender people at the time, Transgender Day of Remembrance, which mourned transgender people who had been murdered, but didn't acknowledge and celebrate those who were living, and she thought a holiday should.

International Transgender Day of Visibility celebrates transgender people and their accomplishments and contributions to society and raises awareness about and fights against the discrimination they face around the world. It presents an opportunity to show support for the transgender community and honors the community's elders. Advocates for the day believe that visibility will lead to less social isolation for transgender people and that empathy will be built in the cisgender majority. Trans Student Educational Resources, a youth advocacy organization, has provided outreach, social media, and promotion for the day since 2013.

International Transgender Day has been celebrated by raising awareness online, such as by sharing personal stories, selfies, and statistics about transgender issues. Supporters have organized many events, such as marches, picnics, and roller derbies. Public areas have been lit up with the colors of the transgender flag. In 2021, President Joe Biden proclaimed March 31 as Transgender Day of Visibility, becoming the first American president to recognize the day with a proclamation. "Today, we honor and celebrate the achievements and resiliency of transgender individuals and communities," he said. "I call upon all Americans to join in the fight for full equality for all transgender people." He issued a similar proclamation the following year, and also marked the day by hosting transgender Jeopardy! champion Amy Schneider and announcing measures to support transgender rights. He continued issuing proclamations for the day in 2023 and 2024.
