Today is a day when people wear brown shoes. At one point in time, brown shoes were looked at as of a lesser prestige than black shoes. Indeed, phrases such as "no brown in town" and "no brown after six" referred to shoes, and the phrases were adhered to. By the 1950's, brown shoes became popular daywear, but were still not popular in the evening for a night out on the town. Today the norms and rules have been relaxed, and you can find people wearing brown shoes at any time of the day.

Celebrate the day by wearing brown shoes, or going out and buying some if you don't have any. It doesn't matter whether they are dress or casual shoes, as long as they are brown!
