April Showers Day
The proverb "March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers," dating to 1886, and the line "Sweet April showers/Do spring May flowers," written in a poem in 1610, form the basis of a phrase now commonly heard: "April showers bring May flowers." It may stem from Chaucer, who centuries earlier in the General Prologue, the first part of The Canterbury Tales, wrote: "Whan that Aprill, with his shoures soote The droghte of March hath perced to the roote."
April showers are rains that come in the Northern Hemisphere in the early spring month of April. Heavy rain downpours are common at this time, are caused by the position of the jet stream, which moves north and causes large depressions to bring rain and strong winds from the Atlantic Ocean. On April Showers Day, we celebrate this phenomenon and check to see if it is raining—there's a strong possibility it will be.
How to Observe April Showers Day
Celebrate by checking if there are April showers outside your window. If there are, grab an umbrella or put on a raincoat and galoshes and go outside to enjoy them. If it's sunny, you could plant some flowers. When you get back inside, you could watch a film that features a lot of rain or listen to some songs that reference rain.
