Doge Day
In 2021, fans of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin (pronounced "dohj-coin") declared April 20 to be Doge Day, with the goal of raising the coin's value. In this they were successful: There was a large demand for Dogecoin on the first Doge Day and Dogecoin gained 20% in value, to 42 cents, and continued this upward trend during the following weeks. However, some had hoped that the value of Dogecoin would rise to $1, which did not happen. Still, the gain was huge considering that at the beginning of the year Dogecoin was valued at 0.005405 cents, but by the first Doge Day it was the fifth most valuable cryptocurrency.
Dogecoin (DOGE) was created in 2013 by two software engineers, Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, to be a non-serious rival to Bitcoin. While there are 21 million Bitcoins, a finite amount, the number of Dogecoin continues to rise. There were 100 billion Dogecoin in circulation at its start, 129 billion at the time of the first Doge Day, and 148 billion in March 2025. Dogecoin is based on the Doge meme, which features a Shiba Inu dog, and the Dogecoin has a Doge meme on it. A connection was forged between Doge Day and National Pot Smokers Day, also taking place on April 20, and the hashtags #DogeDay and #Doge420 were used on the first Doge Day and continue to be used on it.
The value of Dogecoin rose in 2021 in part because of the adoption of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin by businesses and mainstream investors. At the time, Elon Musk was a great proponent of Dogecoin, as were Snoop Dogg, Gene Simmons, and Mark Cuban. But after the first Doge Day, the value of Dogecoin dipped very low for a number of years, in part because of the proliferation of other meme coins, which caused it to lose some of its appeal. Doge Day has continued to be celebrated in the crypto world, with supporters using the day to promote Dogecoin and to try to drive up its value, in hopes it will be seen as a more viable cryptocurrency for investments and transactions, and more legitimate to institutions and investors.
