Did you ever have to line up alphabetically while in school growing up? Were you towards the end of the line, or did you know someone who was towards the end of the line? Do you remember anyone having a name that started with a Z that was always last? Today their name is finally up first because it is Z Day. Z Day was created "to give recognition on the first day of the year to all persons and places whose names begin with the letter Z and who are always listed or thought of last in any alphabeticalized list."
How to Observe Z Day
Celebrate the day by giving some recognition to people and places whose names begin with a Z. Do you have a friend whose first or last name starts with a Z? Spend the day with them and let them go first in everything you do. Hold the door for them when going into a building, and let them order their food first if you are at a restaurant. You could also give some recognition to famous people whose first or last names start with a Z. Watch a movie starring Zooey Deschanel or Renée Zellweger. Listen to some Frank Zappa or Warren Zevon. Not only is the day for people, but it is also for places. Visit a city that starts with a Z, or go to a place with a name that starts with a Z, such as a zoo.
