Many dogs take walks every day, but for those that don't, they'll at least take a walk today, because it's Walking the Dog Day! Walks help keep dogs healthy. As many as 50% of dogs are overweight, and walks help with their weight management. Walks improve joint health as well. Since dogs tend to go to the bathroom when on walks, walks help with their digestive and urinary health, by preventing constipation and bladder infections. Walks provide dogs with mental stimulation, which improves their mental health, and walks help dogs get rid of excess energy and sleep more soundly. Walking the dog is not just beneficial for dogs, but for their owners too, and committing to walking your dog not just today, but every day, will help you fulfill your exercise goals too!
How to Observe Walking the Dog Day
Walk your dog (or dogs) through a park or down the sidewalk in your neighborhood. Weather permitting, go for an extra long walk, or go for more than one walk. Let your dog set the pace of the walk—whether that means they walk fast or stop and sniff around. If you don't have a dog, join a family member or friend while they walk their dog, or consider adopting a dog. Still want more ways to celebrate? How about listening to "Walking the Dog" by Rufus Thomas or walking the dog with a yo-yo.
