Love Your Lawyer Day celebrates lawyers and highlights the good work they do, which often is thankless. It was created in 2001 by Nader Anise, a business attorney based in Fort Lauderdale and founder of the American Lawyers Public Image Association (ALPIA). It was known as I Love My Lawyer Day the first year, and the American Bar Association recognized it in 2015 with a resolution. Anise created it because he was tired of seeing lawyers' images taking a hit when they were just trying to do their jobs. They are often given a bad name, the public largely has a negative perception of them, and they are regularly portrayed negatively in pop culture.
No lawyer jokes or lawyer bashing is allowed on Love Your Lawyer Day. People celebrate their favorite lawyers by giving them gifts, taking them out to lunch, sending them testimonials of their work, and making donations to charities in their name. Lawyers participate too, by doing pro bono work or donating to charity.
How to Observe Love Your Lawyer Day
Celebrate your favorite lawyer! The ALPIA suggests expressing love for them by sending them a card, note, flowers, or gift, taking them out for lunch, sending them a testimonial of their work, or making a donation to a charity in their name. No lawyer bashing or lawyer jokes are allowed today, and the ALPIA suggests that for every lawyer-degrading slip-up you have, you should donate $20 to a charity. Lawyers can participate too, and give back the love by doing an hour of pro bono work, or by donating to a charity the equivalent of what they'd bill for an hour's worth of work. Make sure to use the hashtag #LoveYourLawyerDay and to post photos and videos on social media of how you're celebrating!
