World Calligraphy Day

World Calligraphy Day, founded by the Manuscript Pen Company in 2017, celebrates the art of beautiful writing known as calligraphy. During some celebrations, the Manuscript Pen Company has partnered with Birmingham Children's Hospital in Birmingham, England, for a "Say Something Special" campaign. The campaign encouraged people to write handwritten letters to send to children at the hospital. Events have been held on the day at the Pen Museum, also in Birmingham. Calligraphers have organized workshops there and displayed their work. The Manuscript Pen Company has organized other events throughout England, and there have been activities, competitions, and challenges on the company's social media pages.

Calligraphy, a visual art related to writing, takes its name from the Ancient Greek word kalligraphía, which means "beautiful writing." It consists of lettering with an ink brush, pen, or another writing instrument. Water-based ink that has a low viscosity is used more so than oil-based ink. Calligraphy is an important art form in East Asia and the Islamic world. In the Western world, calligraphy is often found on event and wedding invitations, announcements, in font design and typography, in hand-lettered logo design, in religious art, in cut stone inscriptions, in maps, and in moving images in film and television.

How to Observe World Calligraphy Day

• Visit the Pen Museum. Check if events are being held there in honor of the day.
• Participate in Birmingham Children's Hospital's "Say Something Special" campaign if it is being held this year.
• Check for other events being organized by the Manuscript Pen Company.
• Follow the Manuscript Pen Company on Facebook and Instagram and watch for activities, competitions, and challenges they are organizing in honor of the day.
