Gryffindor is one of the four houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter novels and films. Celebrated by fans of Harry Potter, Gryffindor Pride Day is part of Hogwarts House Pride Week. In the series, students are "Sorted" into one of the houses when they start their first year at the school. The Gryffindor house founder, Godric Gryffindor, instructed the Sorting Hat to choose house members based on certain traits and characteristics that he places a high value on, including bravery, nerve, courage, determination, and chivalry. Some prominent Gryffindors are Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, as well as Molly Weasley and Remus Lupin.
Gryffindor house corresponds with the element of fire. This being the case, the colors of scarlet and gold represent the house. The house's symbol or mascot is the lion, which the colors of fire are also associated with: gold represents the coat, while scarlet represents the mane and tail. Together, the visual representation of the house is similar to the historical English coat of arms.
During the time of Harry Potter, Minerva McGonagall is head of the Gryffindor house and also its transfiguration professor. The house ghost is Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, who is also known as Nearly Headless Nick. Gryffindors are known for sharing a rivalry with Slytherins. They spend much of their time in the Gryffindor Common Room, which is located in Gryffindor Tower. To enter, one must go to the seventh floor and give a password to the lady in the oil painting. The room has a fireplace and is used for studying, celebrations, and relaxation. Two staircases are in it that go up to the students' dormitories.
