National English Muffin Day
National English Muffin Day celebrates the versatile breakfast bread with its crisp exterior, soft interior, and famous “nooks and crannies.” Observed annually on April 23, it’s an opportunity to enjoy English muffins with sweet or savory toppings, from butter, jam, and honey to eggs, cheese, or a breakfast sandwich.
The English muffin’s history has several versions. Samuel Bath Thomas, a British immigrant, opened a bakery in New York in 1880 and made what he called “toaster crumpets.” His griddle-baking process helped create the distinctive texture associated with English muffins today. Thomas’ later described the original English muffin as using a secret process that included griddle baking. A 2018 company announcement also notes the brand’s connection to Thomas and his New York bakery.
The origin of the holiday itself is unknown. One account says the observance first appeared around 2017, but no creator was identified. Whatever its beginnings, April 23 offers a simple reason to split, toast, and top this adaptable breakfast favorite.
