World Mental Health Day aims to raise awareness throughout the global community about critical mental health agendas. It brings attention to mental illness and its effects on people worldwide, and it allows mental health professionals to share their work, prioritizing mental health worldwide. Various collaborators take action on the day to create lasting change. Governments, organizations, and individuals use the day to develop initiatives to focus on mental health care.
World Mental Health Day was created in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health, at the initiation of then Deputy Secretary-General Richard Hunter. Since 1994, each observance has had a theme; the first theme was "Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services throughout the World." The World Health Organization supports the day, and in some countries, such as Australia, the day is part of Mental Health Week.
