Bartender and Mixologist Day

Created by Jace Shoemaker-Galloway, Bartender and Mixologist Day "celebrates those talented folks who are experts at servin' up the perfect cocktail concoction." Bartenders tend bar, serving alcoholic and soft drinks. They mix cocktails, but usually just the more well-known and classic ones, not creating new ones themselves. Other tasks entrusted to them may be to maintain inventory and confirm that customers are of age to drink. They work in bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and sometimes at private parties.

Mixologists practice the art of mixology, creating new and innovative craft cocktails, often based on flavor profiles, themes, and customer preferences. They are highly skilled bartenders with a deep knowledge of spirits, ingredients, and flavors, which they apply when making the cocktails. Most mixologists start out as bartenders, and many often still serve drinks to customers. They often work in bars and restaurants as cocktail consultants, making new cocktails and improving established ones, and making new cocktail menus for their employers. Some mixologists also work at spirits companies.

The term "mixology" became common in the late nineteenth century following the publication of Jerry Thomas' Bartender's Guide in 1862 and Harry Johnson's New and Improved Illustrated Bartender's Manual in 1882. However, cocktails were not the first choice of most consumers for much of the twentieth century, their draw being blunted by Prohibition and the Great Depression, with only the rich consuming them in large numbers. Cocktail bars really didn't take off in popularity until the final decade of the century. On Bartender and Mixologist Day, the bartenders and mixologists who mix up classic and craft cocktails are celebrated!
