Tackling Hunger Month is observed throughout October to raise awareness of hunger and encourage people to help ensure that no one goes without food. The observance began in 2002, when Campbell’s Chunky Soup partnered with America’s Second Harvest, now known as Feeding America, to declare October Tackling Hunger Month.
The first campaign was part of Campbell’s season-long Tackling Hunger 2002 effort, which aimed to raise awareness and generate donations for food banks. According to Campbell’s announcement, the partnership sought to generate up to $700,000 in donations. Its activities included food donations connected to the Click for Cans program, a coupon-based donation to America’s Second Harvest, and support from participating retailers.
Tackling Hunger Month offers an opportunity to learn more about hunger in local communities and support food banks or hunger-relief organizations. The original campaign also encouraged NFL fans, retailers, and community members to take part in helping provide food for people in need.
How to Observe Tackling Hunger Month
Celebrate by donating nonperishable food, money, or time to a local food bank or hunger-relief organization. You can also organize a food drive, support a community food program, or learn more about hunger and the resources available to people facing food insecurity. If you donate food, choose shelf-stable items such as canned goods, soup, peanut butter, dry beans, rice, olive oil, or nuts.
